Terracon Announces Temporary Closure of Fort McMurray Office and Laboratory in Response to the Wildfire

May 14, 2024

Terracon has announced the temporary closure of its Fort McMurray office and laboratory in response to the escalating wildfire emergency and evacuations in the region. The decision comes as part of Terracon's commitment to prioritize the safety and well-being of its employees and the community. Material samples will be redirected to our other laboratories in the province for processing and those regularly working at the office will commence working remotely.

"Our foremost priority is the safety and welfare of our employees, their families, and the communities we serve," said Jake Rubenstein, President and CEO, of Terracon. "Given the severity and unpredictability of the wildfire situation in the region, and based on our experiences from the 2016 wildfires, we have made the difficult but necessary decision to temporarily close our office and laboratory to allow staff and their families to take the appropriate actions based on the emergency alerts in the region."

Terracon is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to follow guidance given by local authorities and emergency management agencies to assess the evolving risks and determine the appropriate course of action. The company is committed to providing support and assistance to its employees, clients, and partners during this challenging time.

"Our hearts go out to our employees and residents of Fort McMurray and all those affected," added Jake. "This is a very difficult time, but we have been here before and have all the necessary procedures in place to ensure the safety of our employees and also to activate the safe return to the office when it is safe to do so."

Terracon encourages residents in affected areas to heed the warnings and evacuation orders issued by local authorities and to prioritize their safety and well-being. The company will continue to provide updates on its response efforts and the status of its Fort McMurray office as new information becomes available.
